Why Northeastern University Should Boycott World Bank Bonds
The World Bank is now the largest lending institution on earth, and the power that comes with this is not used judiciously. Instead of the noble ends of development and ending poverty envisioned in its birth in 1944, the bank has become self-serving, profiteering, environmentally devastating, and horrifically undemocratic.
HEA: War on drugs = war on education?
What is the HEA?
The Higher Education Act (HEA) was created over three decades ago to open opportunities for higher education. It establishes federal financial aid programs, and is periodically reviewed and updated by Congress to ensure adequate funding and access to college for millions of Americans. The 1998 revision to the HEA includes a new provision that closes college opportunities to students revealing drug convictions on their application forms.
How does this affect me?
Starting in the 2001-2002 school year, students who do not answer the drug question will not have their application processed. This year 103,502 students answered "yes" to the drug question on the FAFSA form. Of those answering "yes", 725 returned follow-up worksheets revealing partial disqualifications, 3 returned blank responses, and 29,361 did not return the follow-up worksheets. Therefore, the total number of students who have been denied aid in the 2001-2002 school year so far is 39,537. Adding that to last year's total, 48,651 students have been denied financial aid since this law's enactment.

What can I do?
